The Calm After the Storm

Although the Pandemic and social, political, and economic crises are still raging in the wider world, the past couple of months have been very relieving for me. I am extremely fortunate to be going to a college that is both providing, at much expense, many engaging in-person experiences and strong health protocols. I have been able to regain a regular schedule of learning, socializing, fun activities, and self-care, despite my living situation being changed in many ways from pre-Pandemic times. Looking back now at how troubled and chaotic the first couple months of quarantine were for me, I was inspired to write the lyrics to a song. I envision a deep-voiced, earnest chorus alternating with nonchalant yet exasperated verses, and a triumphant outro in which the bridge echoes the first line of the chorus.

"The Calm After the Storm "

It’s the calm after the storm We were one, but now we’re torn We got back up, but we’re real worn Can we find out how to be reborn?

Yeah! It’s so cliched to say that times are tough Yeah! It’s so cliched to say that things are rough But yeah! All we really want to do is say it’s all messed up And kick our shoes right through the mud

But yet it’s the calm after the storm We were one, but now we’re torn We got back up, but we’re real worn Can we find out how to be reborn?

Yeah! All I want to do is relive, oh, that first day Yeah! When things had changed, but I would relax and set things straight But yeah! What I would give to fix things and go that way Instead of just lying down afraid

But now it’s the calm after the storm We were one, but now we’re torn We got back up, but we’re real worn Can we find out how to be reborn?

We’ve spent so much time thinking about how things are falling down That we fail to see the scattered pieces spread all around We’ve got to pick them off the ground

Now it’s the calm after the storm (We’ve spent so much time thinking about how things are falling down) Now it’s the calm after the storm (That we fail to see the scattered pieces spread all around) Now it’s the calm after the storm (We’ve spent so much time thinking about how things are falling down) Now it’s the calm after the storm (That we fail to see the scattered pieces spread around) Let us pick them off the ground!
